Carly Gwyn Johns

Trainer/Owner

Carly’s first experience with horses started over 30 years ago when a pony named “Sugar Bear” gave her a first ride, and a first fall, within about 30 minutes. When she looked up at her dad with tears in her eyes and asked, “Can I get back on now?” he knew he had a true equestrian on his hands. She hasn’t stopped riding since. Carly grew up riding and showing in Georgia with Janet Salem and Patchwork Farms. She attained numerous year end awards in every age equitation division for GHJA and qualified for regional and national finals such as JD Pounds, GHJA medal, ASPCA Medal Maclay finals. Carly was successful in hunters, jumpers, and equitation divisions. Her success in showing and working with many different types of horses enabled her to attain a scholarship to ride for the University of South Carolina. While on the team, Carly contributed to three national titles for the hunt seat team as well as being captain of the 2007 National Championship Team. After college, she relocated to Austin, TX and started teaching, her ultimate passion. Carly worked as an assistant trainer/manager at Madrone Ranch Stables, head trainer/manager at Lone Star Stables and is now the proud owner and trainer of Gwyn Haven Equestrian. She gained experience working with at- risk youth and riders with special needs at Healing with Horses Ranch. Her students have had success at the local and national levels winning year end awards in CTHJA, THJA competitions, as well as qualifying for national events such as Pony Finals. Carly practices kind and correct methods in her riding. She enjoys finding reliable and capable equine partners for her clients. Carly believes when riding and caring for horses, we gain a better sense of self, grow confidence, grasp empathy, master responsibility, and learn to be present. In my years of experience, I’ve found as much joy watching students win in the show ring, as I have watching them apply the skills they learn at the stables to their everyday life.” -Carly
